A young geologist from Delft in Holland is sent to find oil in Indonesia in 1904, by his company Royal Dutch Shell. Because conditions are too basic his wife is at first left on the other side of Sumatra but joins him later when he has built a house for her. This is their story recorded from letters to his mother and includes stories of how his wife brought up her five children, and their annual return to Holland by boat, including one return during the First World War.
